Wallsend Man Jailed for Spying on Holidaymakers at Butlin’s Resort

A man who secretly filmed holidaymakers as they undressed at a Butlin’s resort has been jailed for three years.

Mark Simpson, 51, of Wallsend, North Tyneside, pleaded guilty to multiple offences including two counts of voyeurism, after recording people getting changed at Butlin’s Skegness on 30 separate occasions.

He also admitted possession of a prohibited image of a child, taking an indecent image of a child, two counts of distributing indecent images, and nine counts of making indecent images.

Simpson appeared at Newcastle Crown Court on Monday, where he was sentenced for 15 charges linked to dozens of incidents between 2017 and 2023, according to Lincolnshire Police.

Police said 34 voyeurism incidents were identified, 30 at Butlin’s changing rooms and four at another undisclosed location.

Simpson was caught in April 2023 after a man reported that his wife had been spied on while changing.

When officers examined Simpson’s phone, they found multiple videos of voyeurism and a collection of indecent images of children. A hidden folder containing a chat app showed that Simpson had exchanged prohibited and indecent material with others online.

PC Andy Taylor, who led the investigation, said:

“This sentence aims to provide justice for the victims whose privacy and personal space were violated.

I would like to extend my gratitude to everyone involved in this process, to reach this positive outcome today.”

The police have urged anyone who believes they may have been a victim of similar offences to come forward.
