The Midlands is set to be hit by a major snow bomb on Thursday, January 29, with forecasts warning of widespread snowfall across England and Scotland. Weather charts and maps from WX Charts show that the West Midlands and East Midlands will not escape the icy conditions.
Counties at risk include Staffordshire, Shropshire, Nottinghamshire, Leicestershire, and Derbyshire, along with the Black Country, which includes Dudley, Tipton, Wolverhampton, and Walsall. Stoke-on-Trent is also expected to see significant snow accumulation.
In Staffordshire, towns such as Stafford, Burton upon Trent, Cannock, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Tamworth, Leek, Lichfield, Rugeley, Burntwood, and Kidsgrove could all be affected.
Across Nottinghamshire, snow is expected in Nottingham, Mansfield, Newark-on-Trent, Worksop, Beeston, Arnold, Retford, Sutton-in-Ashfield, and Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Meanwhile, Derbyshire towns including Chesterfield, Bakewell, Buxton, Ashbourne, Matlock, Wirksworth, and Swadlincote may also be dusted.
Other Midlands towns at risk include Loughborough, Hinckley, Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray, Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Coalville, Lutterworth, Oadby, and Leicester.
Meteorologist Jo Farrow of Netweather TV explained the unusual pattern behind the snow bomb:
“There is a huge meander in the jet stream, disrupted by a cut-off low heading north to the Arctic, while the more southern portion dips into northern Africa. This creates the perfect conditions for snow to hit the Midlands and other parts of the UK.”
Farrow added that the Atlantic is currently struggling to generate storms, so the UK will see southeast air flows bringing cold conditions, while no major storms are expected from northwest Europe in the coming days.
Forecasters are urging residents and local authorities across the Midlands to prepare for travel disruption, icy roads, and potential school closures as the snow bomb approaches.
