Two Arrested After Nine-Month-Old Dies in Dog Attack in South Wales

Two people have been arrested following the death of a nine-month-old baby in a dog attack in South Wales.

The incident occurred at a property in Crossway, Rogiet, when a family dog, a six-year-old male XL bully, attacked the infant. Emergency services were called at around 6pm on Sunday, but the baby was pronounced dead at the scene.

Gwent Police confirmed that two individuals from Rogiet have been arrested on suspicion of being in charge of a dog dangerously out of control causing injury resulting in death. Both are also being investigated on suspicion of child neglect. The pair have since been released on police bail as inquiries continue.

The dog involved was registered with the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra), and a certificate of exemption was issued in 2024.

Assistant Chief Constable Vicki Townsend said the arrests are part of a wider investigation into the tragic incident. “These inquiries are ongoing, and officers will continue to be present in the area. We urge the public not to speculate online or on social media, as this could affect the criminal justice process,” she said.

Townsend encouraged anyone with information about the incident or the dog’s previous behaviour to contact Gwent Police directly. “My condolences and thoughts are with everyone affected by this tragic death, both within the community and beyond,” she added.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Gwent Police and quote log reference 2500349915.
