Over 1.5 Million Brits at Risk of No Heating as Suppliers Axe Orders

UK households are facing heating and hot water shortages as suppliers cancel orders amid soaring oil prices, driven higher by the ongoing conflict between the US and Iran. Over 1.5 million Brits not connected to the gas grid rely on heating oil to keep their homes warm.

Customers have reported frustration after firms axed their orders. One Certas customer said their delivery was cancelled last week, with prices now tripling compared to their original purchase.

They said: “I have not had a refund and now face waiting 15 days for another order with a different supplier. I’m going to run out of oil and will have no heating or hot water.”

Similarly, a Watson Fuels customer claimed they were left “high and dry” after placing an order that never arrived. Another added: “Like many others, we received an email saying they couldn’t deliver the next day, leaving us too late to get oil elsewhere.”

One customer recounted ordering 500 litres of oil before the war escalated. On delivery day, their order was cancelled. The original cost of £325 has now risen to £785 if reordered, with the supplier blaming storage delays.

The issue comes as Labour Party Chancellor Rachel Reeves was questioned about reviewing the planned fuel duty rise this autumn. She warned that petrol prices could surge further if the Middle East conflict persists.

Ms Reeves said: “The price of petrol today is 8p per litre lower than it would have been under the previous Conservative government’s plans, and from April it will be 11p lower. Oil prices are volatile, currently 24% lower than yesterday, which underscores the importance of de-escalating the conflict in the Middle East to help with the cost-of-living challenges.”
