Former Swindon Councillor Confesses to Drugging, Raping Ex-Wife

A former Conservative councillor has pleaded guilty to drugging and raping his former wife over a period spanning more than a decade.

Philip Young, 49, admitted to 48 serious sexual offences committed against Joanne Young between 2010 and 2024. Ms Young, who has waived her legal right to anonymity, was present in court as her former husband entered his guilty pleas.

The offences include multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, voyeurism and administering substances with intent to stupefy in order to carry out sexual acts. Prosecutors also said Young admitted publishing hundreds of non-consensual intimate images and videos of his ex-wife online.

Ms Young, 48, divorced Young following his arrest in 2024. During the hearing at Winchester Crown Court, she sat supported by her sister and a witness support officer.

Young, who served as a Conservative councillor in Swindon between 2007 and 2010, stood in the dock and confirmed his identity before pleading guilty to 11 counts of rape, seven counts of sexual assault by penetration, four counts of sexual touching, 11 counts of administering a substance to enable sexual activity, 14 counts of voyeurism and one count of publishing obscene material.

Some of the offences were alleged to have been committed with other men. Young denied eight further charges, including offences relating to indecent images of children and possession of extreme pornography.

Five other men appeared in court accused of sexual offences against Ms Young. Four of them pleaded not guilty, while one is yet to enter pleas. The trial involving the remaining defendants is expected to last up to six weeks from October.

Young has been remanded in custody at Bullingdon Prison ahead of sentencing.

Following the hearing, prosecutors described the case as one of extreme seriousness, while Wiltshire Police praised Ms Young for her courage in coming forward and enduring the legal process.

Police have also renewed an appeal for information to help identify another suspect linked to the investigation, urging members of the public to come forward with any relevant information.
