When you go into hospital for surgery the last thing you expect is for the doctor responsible for keeping you alive to disappear for a quick fling. Yet that is what a medical tribunal has heard happened at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester.
What Happened
Dr Suhail Anjum a consultant anaesthetist admitted leaving a patient under general anaesthetic part way through an operation. He asked for a short comfort break but instead of returning he met a nurse known only as Nurse C in a nearby theatre room.
The two were caught in a compromising situation by another member of staff who then reported the shocking misconduct.
Patient Safety Not at Risk But That Is Not the Point
The tribunal was told the patient remained stable throughout and the operation was completed without incident. But that does not excuse the behaviour. An anaesthetist must monitor a patient’s every heartbeat and breath during surgery. Walking away for personal reasons let alone for a sexual encounter is a serious breach of trust.

The Doctor’s Response
Dr Anjum admitted the allegations in full and apologised without reservation.
“It was quite shameful to say the least. I only have myself to blame. I offer my sincere apologies to everyone affected and I want the chance to put this right” he said.
He explained that the lapse in judgement came at a stressful period in his personal life.
What Happens Next
The General Medical Council GMC will now decide whether Dr Anjum’s behaviour warrants sanctions which could include suspension or being struck off the medical register.
Why This Matters
Cases like this shake public confidence in the NHS. While the patient was not harmed it is alarming to think of the risks if something had gone wrong. The role of an anaesthetist is one of the most crucial in an operating theatre and there is no room for negligence of this scale.
