Horrifying Early-Morning Arson Leaves Birmingham Home Damaged

A Birmingham family has described the terror of fleeing their home after their cars were set alight in an arson attack, reportedly due to mistaken identity.

Shocking footage shows a hooded individual pouring petrol over two vehicles on the driveway of a Handsworth property just after 3.20am on Monday, March 9. Another person filmed the attack from a waiting car, with the footage later circulating on social media.

The victims – a couple in their 50s said it was a relief that the cars did not explode, which could have caused serious injuries or fatalities.

The family believe they were unintentionally targeted after captions on publicly shared videos referenced a completely different person and location.

The dad-of-two, who asked not to be named, told BirminghamLive:

“This has been an extremely traumatic experience for my family. My wife and I have lived quietly in this area for many years. To wake up and find our home targeted in this way was deeply frightening. We ran out immediately, and my wife even sprained her ankle. Our friends and neighbours came outside in the middle of the night while our driveway was ablaze. If even one of the vehicles had exploded, there could easily have been serious injuries or fatalities.”

The fire destroyed both cars, scorched the front of the property, and shattered the windows.

A West Midlands Police spokesperson confirmed the investigation is ongoing. They said officers are maintaining contact with the family and carrying out reassurance patrols in the area. Anyone with information is asked to contact police quoting crime reference 20/172531/26.

West Midlands Fire Service added that two fire engines and a brigade response vehicle attended the scene. Firefighters using breathing apparatus tackled the blaze with hose reels, preventing it from spreading, and the fire was fully extinguished by 3.50am. Fortunately, no one was harmed.
