Afghan Teenagers Named After Assaulting 15 Year Old Girl in Warwickshire Park

Two teenage Afghan asylum seekers who assaulted a 15 year old girl in a park have been named despite warnings that releasing details of the attack could lead to widespread public disorder.

Jan Jahanzeb and Israr Niazal, both aged 17, arrived in the UK on small boats as unaccompanied minors before attacking the girl in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire.

Jahanzeb made three failed attempts to cross the Channel before finally succeeding in January, when he was rescued by the coastguard after his inflatable boat broke down in UK waters. Niazal arrived in the UK in November last year.

Both teenagers were living in taxpayer funded accommodation at the time of the attack in May. At Warwick Crown Court yesterday, Judge Sylvia de Bertodano ruled that lifting the reporting ban on their identities was in the public interest, despite defence claims that naming them could spark public unrest.

Prosecutor Shawn Williams said the girl was taken by Jahanzeb to a secluded area of Newbold Comyn park. Jahanzeb contacted Niazal, who arrived at the scene, and together they restrained the girl. During the incident, the girl sought help from a passerby, but she did not intervene. The girl eventually escaped and was assisted by someone who contacted the police.

The girl recorded part of the incident and events afterward. Williams said that during the video Jahanzeb was seen trying to prevent the girl from calling for help. Footage also captured the girl calling out for assistance.

Jahanzeb was sentenced to ten years and eight months in custody, with the judge recommending deportation upon release. Niazal received a sentence of nine years and ten months.
