The attack took place on Smallbrook Queensway shortly before 9pm on Friday. Ms Fox was rushed to hospital in critical condition but later died from her injuries over the weekend.
Djeison Rafael, 21, of Smethwick, has been charged with murder in connection with the incident. He appeared before Birmingham Magistrates’ Court on Monday, where he also faced charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm, possession of a Stanley blade, and assaulting a detention escort officer.
Rafael, a British citizen, appeared in court wearing a grey T-shirt and was flanked by two officers during the brief six-minute hearing. The proceedings were repeatedly interrupted as the defendant attempted to speak over the judge. District Judge John Bristow ordered him to remain silent and remanded him in custody ahead of a Birmingham Crown Court appearance on 12 November.

At Ms Fox’s childhood home in Northfield, her family were said to be too distraught to speak. Neighbours expressed their disbelief at the tragedy. One resident told reporters:
“They’ve lived here for over 20 years. Katie was a lovely girl. I can’t believe she’s gone—it’s heartbreaking.”
Cathy Crossley, from the mental health arts charity Arts All Over The Place, paid tribute online, writing:
“Tragic news today that Katie Fox, partner of Gary Morris, died after being stabbed on Friday evening in Birmingham. She was a friend of AAOTP for many years, and we are all devastated.”
West Midlands Police confirmed that officers responded to emergency calls reporting an attack at a bus stop. Detective Inspector James Nix, who is leading the investigation, said:
“We believe this was an unprovoked attack and are working to understand why it happened. Our thoughts are with the woman’s loved ones, and specially trained officers are supporting her family.”
Additional police patrols have been deployed across Birmingham city centre to reassure the public.

Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood, who is also the local MP, described the incident as “shocking” and thanked police for their swift response. She urged any witnesses or those with video footage to come forward.
Police have confirmed that they are not seeking anyone else in connection with the incident.
