Court Hears How Asylum Seeker ‘Danced, Laughed’ After Killing Hotel Worker

An asylum seeker allegedly stabbed a hotel worker 23 times with a screwdriver after following her home from work, a murder trial has heard.

Deng Chol Majek, a Sudanese national who claims to be 19, is accused of murdering 27-year-old Rhiannon Skye Whyte near Bescot Stadium railway station in Walsall on 20 October last year.

Wolverhampton Crown Court heard that Majek had been staying at the Park Inn hotel, which was being used to house asylum seekers, where Ms Whyte worked cleaning rooms and serving food.

According to prosecutor Michelle Heeley KC, Majek followed Ms Whyte from the hotel after her late shift and attacked her on a deserted train platform, stabbing her “over and over again” mainly to the head  before leaving her to bleed to death.

Heeley told the jury: “He left her bleeding to death and then casually went back to his hotel, where he was seen dancing and laughing, clearly excited about what he had done.”

CCTV footage allegedly showed Majek watching Ms Whyte throughout the evening and waiting until she was alone. He was later captured running from the scene holding her mobile phone, which he is accused of throwing into a nearby river.

A train driver discovered Ms Whyte slumped on the platform minutes later. She was taken to hospital but died three days later without regaining consciousness.

The court heard that Majek later returned to the hotel, bought a drink from a local shop, and appeared “unbothered” by what had happened.

Majek denies murder and possession of an offensive weapon.

The trial continues.
