Group of Men Rape Woman in Thames Valley Churchyard

Police have launched an investigation after a woman was raped by a group of men in a churchyard in Banbury.

Thames Valley Police said the attack took place in the grounds of St Mary’s Church in the early hours of Sunday morning. The victim, a woman in her thirties, is being supported by specially trained officers.

Detective Sergeant Mark Personius, who is leading the investigation, described the incident as a “horrific crime” and issued a public appeal for a key witness.

“We believe a woman may have tried to help the victim. At this stage we do not have a description of this Good Samaritan, but if you think this was you, please contact police as you may have vital information,” he said.

He added that Banbury town centre would have been busy at the time and urged anyone who saw or heard anything between midnight and 2.30am to come forward. Officers are also asking people to check any CCTV, dashcam or mobile phone footage from the area.

A scene watch remains in place at the churchyard while forensic examinations are carried out. Detectives are also conducting house-to-house and CCTV enquiries in the area.

DS Personius thanked local residents and businesses for their co-operation during the investigation.

Anyone with information can speak to officers at the scene, call 101, or submit details and footage via the dedicated investigation webpage. The reference number is 43250495078.
