96-Year-Old Wisbech Care Home Resident Named Garden Site Manager

Barton Manor Care Home in Wisbech, managed by Danforth Care Homes, delighted 96-year-old resident Joe White with a brand new greenhouse to support his love for gardening and growing fresh produce.

In addition to the greenhouse, Joe has been proudly appointed as the official Site Manager of the home’s garden, marked with a custom sign in his honour.

Joe’s passion for gardening began during wartime Britain, a time when growing your own food was essential. He has continued to nurture this lifelong interest ever since.

Joe, said  “I started growing food during the war because that was the only way we could eat vegetables or get them. I just enjoy it; I ask what people want, and I just grow it for them for pleasure.

“My favourite things to grow are tomatoes or any kind of fruit tree, but I mostly grow potatoes. The hardest part is making sure you label everything, but you just have to start with the basics.”

Joe’s story goes well beyond his love for gardening. Over the years, he has worked as a crane repair engineer, established nine training centres for young people in Dereham, and even helped build a golf course for RAF Marham. His lifelong commitment to supporting others has left a lasting impact on many communities.

Recognising Joe’s dedication and passion, the team at Barton Manor wanted to create a space where he could continue doing what he loves. Andrea Layton, General Manager at Barton Manor, said:

“We’re always looking for ways to help residents keep doing the things they love. The greenhouse was the perfect way for us to support residents like Joe with their gardening passions.

“Joe is especially enjoying the greenhouse now we’ve kicked off our Ground to Plate initiative with our sister homes at Danforth. We can’t wait to see what delicious meals the residents can enjoy thanks to Joe’s talents.”
