‘I’ll Kill the Police’: Disturbing Final Moments of Birmingham Father

A man fell to his death during a police interaction after he attacked two of his housemates, an inquest heard.

Ayuub Abdi, described as a kind-hearted family man, plunged from a third-floor window at his home in Handsworth following an incident on September 6, 2023.

The 34-year-old had reportedly taken or consumed something and was acting abnormally when he approached his neighbours with a small kitchen knife shortly before 1am. During the altercation, he attempted to stab one of the housemates in the neck and told him I am the prophet I will kill you and I will kill the police, Birmingham Coroner’s Court heard.

The three men were living in separate rooms within a five-bedroom property on Lansdowne Road. One of the victims, who spoke partly through a translator, said Mr Abdi was sometimes friendly and there had been no previous incidents during the nine months they had known him.

The witness described how he approached the kitchen after smelling food cooking and tried to remind Mr Abdi not to forget about his meal. Mr Abdi then started swearing, grabbed a knife, and threatened the housemates. The witness recorded the incident on video and called for help.

During the struggle, both housemates were bitten as they tried to control the knife. The witness said he repeatedly told Mr Abdi to calm down and managed to remove the knife before he left the kitchen and went into the garden. The police were called at approximately 12:51am.

Around 20 minutes later, Mr Abdi fell from the open bedroom window and suffered fatal injuries. A Taser had been deployed as officers attempted to de-escalate the situation. No further action has been taken against the officers involved following an investigation by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.
