Abuse Overshadows Toftwood Social Club’s Bid to ‘Do Things Differently’

A Norfolk social club’s attempt to shake up its live music line-up ended in controversy at the weekend after members hurled abuse at a local band.

The Naked Lights, an alternative indie group from Norwich, performed at Toftwood Social Club near Dereham on Saturday night in what had been billed as a chance to offer members “something they don’t usually see.”

But following the show, the club issued a strongly worded statement on Facebook condemning the behaviour of some of its own members.

“This is not acceptable behaviour and a very bad image of Toftwood Social Club,” the post read.
“All the bands we book travel a great distance to entertain you. You do not pay an entrance fee for these, and we have to cater for every one of our members, not a select few.”

Although the club did not disclose what was said, it stressed it would take a hard stance against any repeat incidents.

“If this behaviour continues you will be dealt with accordingly. It is a real shame it has come to this and The Naked Lights had to receive such abuse.”

The incident was particularly disappointing for the band’s drummer, Ben Carpenter, a regular at the venue who had publicly voiced his excitement about the gig.

Posting on Facebook days earlier, Carpenter urged members to support the performance:

“We need you! My band need a great crowd to show that Toftwood Social Club can do different! Come and see The Naked Lights this Saturday and enjoy something that you don’t usually see!”

The Naked Lights, who have previously headlined the marquee stage at Cromer Carnival, describe themselves as “a ragged adventure, with songs veering from bass-driven gospel, through electronic guitar-house to fuzzy Brit indiepop, all polished with pop melody.”

The booking of the band appeared to be a deliberate move by the club to diversify its entertainment beyond traditional acts.

The Facebook post sparked a wave of reactions from members and supporters.

One commenter wrote:

“For people to be abusive just because it’s not to their own personal taste is disgraceful.”

Another added:

“The band was superb, it’s just a shame that some people don’t understand the club is for everyone. Whether you like the band or not.”
