Safest and Most Dangerous Places Revealed: Norfolk Tops Safety List

A district in Norfolk has been ranked the safest place in England and Wales, according to a newly released national study analysing crime rates across the country.

The research found that Broadland, located in Norfolk, recorded the lowest crime rate nationally, placing it at the top of the safety rankings.

The findings highlight significant contrasts between rural districts and major urban centres, where higher population levels and social challenges often lead to increased crime figures.

Crime Rankings Based on Population

Unlike traditional crime statistics that focus on total recorded offences, the study analysed crime rates based on population size. This approach provides a clearer picture of how likely residents are to experience crime in their area.

Large cities such as Birmingham, London and Manchester frequently appear among the highest for total offences simply due to their large populations.

However, when crime figures are adjusted per resident, the rankings change considerably.

In this analysis, Birmingham ranked 17th, meaning it is not among the top 10 most dangerous places in England and Wales despite its reputation for gang and youth-related crime.

Blackpool Most Dangerous Outside London

While Norfolk topped the list for safety, the seaside resort of Blackpool ranked as the most dangerous area outside London based on crime rate.

It was followed by Manchester and Middlesbrough, both of which recorded significantly higher crime rates per resident.

Within the Midlands region, Nottingham emerged as the most dangerous, placing ninth overall in the national rankings.

Leicester also appeared in the top 20, ranking 18th.

Deprivation Still a Challenge for Birmingham

Although Birmingham did not make the top 10 in the crime rankings, the city continues to face deep social and economic challenges.

Recent research has shown that the six most deprived neighbourhoods in England are located in Birmingham, highlighting persistent inequality across parts of the city.

Experts say deprivation often contributes to higher crime levels, particularly in areas facing unemployment, housing pressures and limited access to opportunities.

Other Safe Areas Across the UK

Alongside Broadland in Norfolk, several other districts were highlighted for their low crime rates.

These include Ribble Valley in Lancashire and Waverley in Surrey, which also ranked among the safest places to live in the country.

The report underscores how population size, economic conditions and local demographics can significantly influence crime statistics across England and Wales.
