The initiative was inspired by Clive Edwards, a much-loved resident who moved into Bayleaf Care Home in September 2025 and quickly became an integral part of the community. A lifelong Tottenham Hotspur supporter and passionate football fan, Clive’s love for the game prompted staff to create a memorable experience not only for him, but for fellow residents as well.
Working alongside personal trainer Liam Rushmer, the Bayleaf team arranged a special visit from former professional footballer Junior McDougald. McDougald, who grew up just a short distance from the care home and was once a youth player for Tottenham, spent time with residents sharing stories from his football career.
The visit also included inclusive activities such as seated football and seated tennis, allowing residents of all abilities to take part and enjoy the session in a fun, engaging way.
The surprises did not stop there. Former Tottenham and England striker Darren Bent, upon learning about Clive’s devotion to Spurs, sent him a personal video message, adding an emotional highlight to an already unforgettable day.
The visit forms part of Bayleaf Care Home’s wider wellbeing programme, which invites guests from different walks of life to spend time with residents, share their experiences, and nominate the next visitor helping to build anticipation, connection, and community spirit within the home.
Speaking about the initiative, Katie Wilkinson, General Manager of Bayleaf Care Home, said:
“We are so grateful to Junior for giving up his time to come and see Clive and the other residents, and also to Darren for sending such a thoughtful video message. It truly made Clive’s day and brought so much joy to everyone involved.”
Bayleaf Care Home continues to focus on resident-led experiences that promote wellbeing, social connection, and happiness proving that small gestures can have a powerful impact.
