UK to Open Door to Global Talent as Trump Hikes U.S. Visa Fees

Britain will make it easier for high skilled workers to come into the country, Finance Minister Rachel Reeves announced on Tuesday, positioning the UK as a global hub for talent and investment.

Her comments came at the opening of Revolut’s new headquarters in London, where she drew a clear contrast with U.S. President Donald Trump’s recent move to raise visa costs for skilled workers.

Trump’s decision last Friday to impose steep increases on the H1B visa programme long a key recruitment pathway for American technology firms has drawn concern from global businesses.

Reeves said the UK would take a different path:

“Unlike President Trump, who has said his government will make it harder to bring talent to the U.S., we want to make it easier to bring talent here.”

London’s Financial Centre Depends on Openness

Global banks and technology firms have repeatedly stressed that London’s position as a leading financial centre relies on the UK remaining attractive to international expertise.

By easing high skilled migration rules, the government hopes to strengthen the UK’s competitiveness and reinforce its reputation as a business friendly destination.
