Deputy Prime Minister Angela Rayner is facing increasing political and personal scrutiny as Sir Keir Starmer’s ethics adviser investigates her alleged underpayment of stamp duty on an £800,000 flat in Hove.
The investigation has triggered renewed interest in Rayner’s private life, which she has long sought to keep out of the public eye. Colleagues say this marks one of the most challenging periods of her political career since she became Labour’s deputy leader in 2020.
Early Controversy Over Customer Complaint
In 2015, shortly after being elected as MP for Ashton-under-Lyne, Rayner came under fire after writing to a Brighton shoe retailer on House of Commons stationery, criticising their customer service. The letter, concerning a pair of novelty R2-D2 heels, was published by the press but resulted in no formal censure.
Political Rise and Media Attention
Since her election, Rayner has risen rapidly through Labour’s ranks, becoming shadow education secretary within a year. Her compelling personal story including her childhood on a Stockport council estate, teenage pregnancy, and early family challenges helped establish her reputation as a relatable figure in Westminster.
Despite being perceived as a close ally of Jeremy Corbyn, Rayner maintained independence from factional divisions, openly supporting aspects of New Labour policies and appealing to a broad spectrum of Labour supporters.
Relationships and Personal Life
Rayner separated from her husband, Mark Rayner, in 2020 and later began a relationship with Labour MP Sam Tarry, a former trade union organiser and political strategist. Tarry, a key figure in Corbyn’s 2016 leadership campaign, was dismissed as a shadow minister in 2022 after appearing on a picket line in defiance of party policy.

Their relationship, which has experienced periods of separation and reconciliation, attracted significant media attention, particularly as Rayner purchased a property in Hove while representing a Greater Manchester constituency.
Tensions Within Labour Leadership
Sources within Labour suggest Starmer’s team was concerned about Tarry’s influence, viewing his confrontational approach as potentially disruptive. Rayner was also reportedly uncomfortable when Tarry lost his Ilford South candidacy amid allegations of irregularities, though she made no public comment.
Despite occasional speculation about her personal relationships and political alliances, Rayner has generally avoided direct controversies until now.
Ongoing Ethics Investigation
The current probe into the stamp duty underpayment has intensified scrutiny on Rayner’s finances and private affairs. While she has denied any wrongdoing, colleagues fear the investigation could damage her long-term political prospects.
For Rayner, a politician who has carefully managed her personal boundaries, this marks an unprecedented intersection of private and public life. As one cabinet source put it: “The red lines have been crossed, and this time, control is no longer hers to keep.”
