Archers Court Nursing Care Home is proudly celebrating Makaton International Awareness Day today, embracing this year’s theme, “Friendship”, which highlights the importance of communication in building connections and breaking down barriers particularly for people living with speech, language, or communication challenges.
Supporting Residents Through Inclusive Communication
Makaton is a unique language programme that combines signs, symbols, and speech to help people communicate more independently. For individuals living with dementia or other communication difficulties, it can be life-changing.
At Archers Court, Makaton has become an integral part of daily life thanks to Jacqueline “Jackie” Smith, Deputy Manager, who first encountered Makaton while supporting her non-verbal grandson, Jay.
“My grandson now uses simple signs like ‘yes,’ ‘no,’ and ‘more’,” Jackie explains. “It has allowed our family to connect with him in ways we never could before.”
Inspired by her personal experience, Jackie introduced Makaton to Archers Court, where it is now being used to support residents living with dementia, helping them express themselves and remain actively involved in daily choices.

Reconnect Communities: Focusing on Abilities, Not Limitations
The care home has two dedicated ‘Reconnect Communities’ designed to focus on what people living with dementia can do, rather than what they can’t. Within these communities, Makaton has become a powerful tool for:
- Helping residents express their needs and preferences
- Supporting everyday decision-making
- Reducing frustration and misunderstandings
- Building stronger emotional connections with carers and loved ones
“Makaton has opened a communication channel for people who struggle with traditional methods of communication,” Jackie says. “It’s about offering choices, reducing frustration, and making sure everyone feels heard.”
Makaton and Dementia Care
The Alzheimer’s Society recommends the use of visual aids such as symbols and pictures to support people who may no longer be able to speak or understand spoken language. Makaton aligns perfectly with these principles, making it an essential tool in dementia care at Archers Court.
“Makaton brings us closer, helps us listen, and allows everyone to be part of the conversation,” Jackie adds. “It’s truly powerful, and I’m thrilled to continue teaching colleagues and residents here at Archers Court.”
